Hieu was born into a poor family in Thuan Loc commune, Hau Loc district. He won second prize in physics at a national contest for excellent students in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years.

Five out of eight Vietnamese students won high prizes at the Asia Physics Olympic contest including one silver, three bronzes and one consolation prize.
