A Vietnamese film on lesbianism was screened at the second Lifescapes Southeast Asian (SEAN) Film Festival, held in Chiang Mai, Thailand early this month.

The film, Which Way to the Sea, tells how five Vietnamese lesbians from the three regions of the country co-exist in their daily lives.

The 53-minute film was directed and produced by Nguyen Van Anh, Pham Mai Phuong and Trang Thanh Hien, under the Hanoi Laboratory for Documentary Films and Video Arts (Hanoi DOCLAB).

Four other Vietnamese films to be screened at the event include The Story of Ones by Pham Ngoc Lan, Who Owns the Land? by Doan Hong Le, Ha Noi Eclipse – the Music of Dai Lam Linh by Barley Norton, and With or Without Me? by Swann Dubus and Tran Phuong Thao.

The Thai film fest aims to create a venue for young film-makers from the Mekong Sub-region, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Viet Nam.

Ha Noi DOCLAB will also present two films at the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival, including A Soldier's Song Sample Experiment recording the stories and testimonies of ordinary people living along Ho Chi Minh Trail during the war; and Hard Rails Across a Gentle River showing the images of vendors plying their trade along Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi.

There was no award granted at either film festival, but entries selected by international filmmakers received a lot of public acclaim.
