The award-winning Vietnamese film “Trang noi day gieng” (Moon at the Bottom of the Well) is being screened at several prestigious US universities from March 26 to April 22 to introduce Vietnam’s diverse culture to American audiences.

The film tells of the tragedy of Hanh, a dutiful wife and school teacher in a rural village in Hue who seems to enjoy a happy marriage. Childless and eager to have a child, she insists her husband Phuong, the rural school headmaster, take a second wife to bear him a child.

However, within their small village, the secret cannot be kept for long, and threatens to destroy her husband’s career. To protect him, Hanh sacrifices their marriage, only to find that he has been scheming the entire time. Lost and alone, Hanh finds solace in the world of deities and spirits.

Hong Anh’s portrayal of Hanh won her the Best Actress award in the Asian category at the 2008 Dubai International Film Festival.

In Vietnam, the film took the Silver Kite award for Best Feature at the 2008 Golden Kite Awards.
