A Vietnamese film titled “Hat mua roi bao lau” (The Bribe of Silence) won the best film award at the Kerela International Film Festival, which was held in India recently.

The film is inspired by a story from 200 years ago, about a young woman, Ly An, who escapes from her village to live a life outside. She becomes illegitimately pregnant. When Ms An returns to her village, she is ostracised by her villagers.

Produced by overseas Vietnamese sisters Doan Minh Phuong and Doan Thanh Nghia, the film was screened at 20 international film festivals such as Flanders, Rio de Janeiro, Raindance, Pusan, Montreal, Edinburgh, Wellington, Auckland, Jerusalem, La Rochelle, Sydney, Seattle, Bermuda, and Deauville.  At the 2005 Rotterdam film festival, it won the “Tiger Award”.
