The 5th International Jew's Harp Festival in Amsterdam will begin on July 28 with a performance by the only Vietnamese Jew's harp artist Nguyen Duc Minh.
Minh, who is also the only Vietnamese member of the International Society of Jew's Harp, will play folk melodies of the northern Mong ethnic minority as well as his own creations.
Minh, who is fascinated by the instrument's wild and unique sound, has spent six years doing independent research on the Jew's harp and finding new ways to play different versions of the unique instrument, of which he owns a diverse collection.
He receives tremendous support from Vietnamese-French Professor Tran Quang Hai, a phonologic and traditional music expert at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, who has spent over 40 years researching Eastern music.
