Vietnam suffers 2-3 loss to Sri Lanka at Davis Cup

(VOV) -Vietnamese tennis players have dropped to group level III at the Davis Cup 2014 tourney after suffering a bitter defeat 2-3 to Sri Lanka in the play-off round.

On April 6, young player Nguyen Hoang Thien of Vietnam defeated Sri Lanka’s No.1 Sharmal Dissanayake 3-0 (6-2, 6-3 and 6-4) to draw level 2-2  in Group II Asia/Oceania zone of the Davis Cup’s men team event which is taking place in Vietnam’s central highland Da Lat city.

However, in a decisive match, Thien’s teammate Do Minh Quan was thrashed 0-3 by Harshana Godamanna. Quan’s lackluster performance led to a 2-3 loss to Sri Lanka, pulling Vietnam down to Group III.

Vietnamese players were awarded US$5,000 in cash prize, and will compete in their Group III next year.
