New Zealand is becoming an attractive destination for many Vietnamese students and the two countries have great potential for cooperation in education, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem at the Vietnam-New Zealand Education Forum in Hanoi on December 4.

The Deputy PM emphasized that the Vietnamese government and people have always paid special attention to education development. The government has allocated 18 percent of its total budget for the education sector and the figure is expected to rise to 20 percent by 2010. International cooperation and assistance have also played an important role in improving education quality to provide highly qualified human resources for national modernization and industrialization when Vietnam integrates deeper into the region and the world. 
 

As New Zealand is one of the top ten countries to have the most advanced education system, he said the forum has opened up new opportunities for exchange and cooperation in education between Vietnam and New Zealand.

 

Deputy PM Khiem said Vietnam wants to receive support from New Zealand in the fields of education, especially post-graduate education, vocational training and English teaching.

 

New Zealand Secretary of  Education Karen Sewell said in future New Zealand will co-operate with the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training in improving the quality of pre-school education, especially the quality of education for ethnic minorities. In addition, New Zealand is committed to improving the quality of tertiary and postgraduate education and English teaching in Vietnam.

 

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Banh Tien Long also spoke of Vietnam’s efforts in adopting training programmes of advanced universities in the region and the world. Vietnam plans to train 20,000 PhD holders from now till 2020, and make changes in university and high school examinations, he added.
