Vietnamese men’s and women’s teams lost to their Chinese opponents in the fifth round of the standard event at the Asian Nations Chess Cup in China on May 22.
The men’s team were defeated 1.5-2.5 by China 1. Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Van Huy put in outstanding performances to draw with Wang Hao, Wang Yue, and Ding Liren, but Nguyen Duc Hoa was defeated by Li Chao B (Elo 2703).
They will next complete against Chinese Taipei.
China 1 top the standings after five rounds, with No 3 seeds Vietnam in fifth out of 14 teams.
Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Nguyen Thi Thanh An, and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung all managed to scrape out draws against their Chinese opponents, but Pham Bich Ngoc lost to Wang Chue.
