The Vietnam Cultural Week got underway in the Lao capital of Vientiane as part of activities to mark the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties (September 5) and the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Friendship Cooperation Treaty between the two countries (July 18).

Present at the opening ceremony in Vientiane on July 17 were Choummaly Sayasone, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and Lao State President. A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, attended the event.

An art performance that coincided with the opening ceremony was broadcast live on television from both the Lao National Cultural Palace in Vientiane and the Hanoi Opera House.

The Vietnam Cultural Week in Laos will feature a fashion show, an art performance programme featuring the Vietnam-Laos partnership, a "Vietnam Space" in Vientiane that imitates a Vietnamese traditional village, Khue Van Cac (Pavilion for the Constellation of Literature), and Hanoi’s ancient streets, and a photo exhibition.

In another effort to mark the occasion, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture and Information will also provide the Lao National Library with a Vietnamese language reading room.
