Cultural experts from Vietnam and Belgium met at a workshop in Hanoi on October 4 to review their cooperation efforts in preserving traditional crafts in ceramics villages in the Red River Delta.
The programme, entitled "A Cultural Journey to Traditional Crafts Villages," was co-sponsored by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture and Information and the French-speaking community of Belgians. Since 2004, the programme has helped establish a network of information on traditional ceramics villages in the region, including famous Bat Trang in Hanoi , Tho Ha in Bac Giang province and Phu Lang in Bac Ninh province.
The workshop reviewed the progress made in the first phase of the project from 2004-2006 and exchanged experiences in raising public awareness of preserving cultural heritages through tourist services.
Chritian Saelens, representative of the Wallonie-Brussels mission inVietnam , said the project is expected to set a model for other projects on preserving cultural heritages through tourism activities, not only in Vietnam but also in the region.
The project will bear the characteristics of tangible and intangible cultural heritages through efforts to hand down and promote skills of traditional crafts in the Red River Delta, said Saelens.
He said he is looking forward to further cooperation withVietnam in this field in the next three years till 2009.
Dr. Dang Van Bai, Director of the Cultural Heritage Department expressed his hope that the French-speaking community of Belgians will continue the project in the second phase to establish a cultural journey recognised nationally and internationally.
