A delegation from the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO attended the first session of the Inter-governmental Committee on Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which opened in Algiers, Algeria on November 18.

The delegation was headed by Le Kinh Tai, the Commission's Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Cultural Department under the Foreign Ministry.

During the two-day session, delegates discussed and approved the implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). They also discussed operating instructions, supporting mechanism and standards of intangible cultural heritage registration with the aim of putting the convention into practice.

The convention was approved in 2003 to protect various cultural forms such as oral legend, theatre arts, cultural traditions and customs, festivals, customs relating to nature and the universe and understanding of traditional handicrafts.

The session drew the participation of representatives from 24 member countries and 36 observing countries.
