Tens of thousands of people have flocked to Me Linh commune, Me Linh district, northern Vinh Phuc province, to attend the Hai Ba Trung (Trung Sisters) Festival, which opened on February 22 - the sixth day of the Lunar New Year.

The opening ceremony also saw the participation of Vice State President Truong My Hoa and President of the Vietnam Women's Union Ha Thi Khiet.

During the three-day festival, participants will be entertained with various folk games, including swinging, cross-bowing, tug of war, singing, volleyball, football and walking on stilts.

According to legend, in 39 AD Lady Le Chan, a widow of the local aristocrat and her Trung Sisters (Trung Trac and Trung Nhi) formed an army to revolt against the Chinese yoke coming from the north. The revolt was briefly successful and the older sister, Trung Trac, established herself as ruler of an independent state and chose Me Linh as a new capital.

However, four years later, Chinese feudal armies returned and her forces were routed. The Trung Sisters, rather than be captured drowned themselves in the Hat Giang river. Today, the temple of Ha Loi, located in a village of the same name, stands as a tribute to them.
