Their spiritual and social life is strongly marked by Then singing, which defines all the supernatural powers, spirits, ghosts and genii which have created and "govern" the universe. In a wider sense, the word Then may refer to:
- The cult of the Then - an animist, indigenous cult incorporating aspects of Buddhism and other beliefs. It combines exorcism with the cure of illness and supernatural blessing.
- The celebration of this cult, through ritual, song, music and dance.
- The female and male practitioners, who are more or less sorcerers.
Then sing is thus an integral part of a very characteristic, populist manifestation of religion. Music plays a key role, with the main instrument, the Dan Tinh, comprising a sound-box made from a dried gourd covered in thin wood, with a long handle.
The Dan Tinh can be played during the dance while a string of small bells rings out the rhythm. The stick also keeps the beat by being struck on the floor. Two sticks whirl in the air, and strike against one another to produce merry sounds.
The instrument is accompanied by a string of small bells. The harmonious song seduces the ceremony participants, especially women.
As a ritual activity, Then singing reflects activities of the secular life and the daily life of working people (movements of rowing, washing the boat, pulling the rope, felling a tree, a dance with a handkerchief, a wooden board and a fan).
