A cache of ancient coins weighing 20 kg has been unearthed in a paddy field in the central Quang Binh province’s Quang Ninh district.

Local farmer Nguyen Duc Dung discovered the coins inside an earthen pot 40cm tall at the depth of 500cm while rummaging through refuse on a rubbish dump.

Some of the copper coins were engraved with Chinese characters.

Dung sold the coins for US$12.5 a kilo.

Archaelogists from the Quang Binh provincial museum said the coins dated from the 8th century – a period when trade between Vietnam and China’s Tang dynasty was booming.
