Taekwondo artists bring more gold medals for Vietnam

(VOV) -Vietnamese Taekwondo champions win three gold medals for their country at this year’s ongoing SEA Games in Myanmar on December 18.

The latest gold medalists were Pham Thi Thu Hien in the women’s 62kg category, duo Nguyen Minh Tu and Nguyen Dinh Toan in the mixed double category, and trio Nguyen Thi Le Kim, Nguyen Thi Thu Ngan and Chau Tuyet Van in the team demonstration category.

Duo Pham Thi Mao and Phan Thi Kieu Duyen also clinched a gold medal in the women’s double Kempo event.

Their teammate Le Thi Thu Hang won a silver medal in the women’s 57kg Kempo after being thrashed by Indonesian opponent.

Taekwondo artist Duong Thanh Tam missed a chance to snatch a gold in the men’s 68-74kg combat category after losing 6-11 to Thai rival Peerathep. Tam was awarded a bronze medal.

Two other athletes, Nguyen Thanh Bao Mi and Nguyen Viet Quoc, bagged silver medals in the double demonstration category.

*** In the men’s volleyball event, Vietnam defeated Laos 3-0 to secure a place at the semi-finals where the Vietnamese players will meet Thailand.

*** Vietnamese female futsal players held a 3-3 draw in a match against Malaysia to take a place in the final against Thailand.

*** Cyclist Mai Nguyen Hung won a silver medal for Vietnam in the 163km single event.

*** Another silver medal was won by Judo artists Nguyen Ngoc Son and Nguyen Thanh Tai in the men’s performance event with 423 points. Duo Le Ngoc Van Anh and Nguyen Hoang Cam Ha also pocketed a silver medal in the women’s Juno Kata performance event with 433 points.

*** In the chess event, two players Thien Hai and Van Huy were trounced by Indonesian rivals and the host Myanmar in the finals, but went on to receive a silver medal.

*** Track-and-field athletes Vu Thi Huong and Nguyen Thi Oanh finished first in the qualifying round of the women’s 200m (clocked at 23’98 and 24’34, respectively) on December 18 and went on to compete in the final, later that day.

High hopes are pinned on Le Trong Hinh and Nguyen Van Huynh who have qualified for the final of the men’s 200m event.
