Ethnic minority people in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, where more than 3,800 sets of gongs are being kept, hold their gong competitions and gong festival regularly at local and regional levels.
The provincial authorities in co-operation with elderly gong artists, have conducted about 400 gong-playing classes and workshops since 2002. These classes have drawn a large number of young people from ethnic groups.
They have also organised exchanges between gong players from various localities with the aim of widening the local coverage of gong culture.
Gongs consist of two main types, Cong and Chieng. Cong has a knob in the middle, while Chieng has none. Cong makes the deep bass sounds, and melodies are coaxed out of Chieng.
