The Vietnam National Ballet and Opera (VNOB) will organise a night of ballet at the Hanoi Opera House on September 6, featuring The Rite of Spring by composer Igor Stravinsky, in addition to a piece by Vietnamese-French choreographer Pham Minh.

The Rite of Spring, written by the Russian composer in 1913, includes a series of episodes depicting a wild pagan spring ritual. A group of wise elders observe a dance in preparation for the death of a girl whom they are offering as a sacrifice to gain the benevolence of the god of spring.

In addition to The Rite of Spring, the show will include a performance of Love of Earth and Sacrifices, choreographed by Minh, who has been a soloist in France's Ballet du Capitole for 10 years. Minh returns to work with the VNOB under a French project supporting Vietnamese cultural development.

The dancers will also perform extracts from classical works by Piotr Tchaikovsky, Ferdinand Harold, Dimitri Chostakowitch, Ludwig Minkus and Edvard Grieg.

The performance will open at 8pm of September 6 and 7 at the Hanoi Opera House.
