Thousands of people flocked to Lim village, Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province on March 1 (the 13th day of the first lunar month) to revel in the Lim festival. Visitors had the chance to enjoy distinctive Quan Ho folk singing and folk games such as cloth weaving, cock fighting, swinging and wrestling.

According to festival organisers, Lien Anh (groups of male singers) and Lien chi (groups of female singers) from 49 villages in the province performed Quan Ho melodies in four small houses on Lim Hill. Visitors were entertained to familiar folk songs such as Farewell and Still Charm or old Quan Ho melodies full of feeling and distinctive cultural identity of the cradle of Quan Ho singing. The festival attracted crowds of spectators as Lien Anh and Lien Chi dressed in four-lapped costumes sung overnight on the hill, indoors or while boating on village waterways.

A French visitor, who came to the festival for the first time, told VOVNews “The atmosphere is wonderful. I like these melodies though I do not understand the song.”

According to local authorities, Tien Du district and Bac Ninh province have paid special attention to preserving and developing Quan Ho folk singing, which originated in the 13th century. Quan Ho clubs have been established in villages and communes.

“Whenever spring comes, the provincial Department of Culture and Information organises singing contests for Quan Ho villages to exchange and compete with each other with the aim of preserving the traditional cultural identity,” said Nguyen Huy Toan, member of the Lim Festival Organising Board.

This year, the organising board mobilised traffic and task force police and local militia to maintain order during the festival. However, festival goers still complained about the situation of beggars sitting along the path to Lim Hill, robberies or the lack of dustbins.

Besides folk games such as wrestling, swinging and cock fighting, many visitors were lured into gambling outside the communal house. Many visitors lost hundreds of thousands of Vietnam Dong to these illegal games.

Ngo Van Thang, a festival goer from Hanoi said he has gone to the Lim Festival for five years, but beggars and disguised gambling partly soured the party. He expressed his hope that the situation will be improved next year.
