Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem defeated his Israeli rival Tamir Nabaty (Elo 2563) on January 30 in the seventh round of the 2012 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, which is taking place in the UK.

With the latest victory after 33 moves, Liem ranks fourth at the ongoing tournament.

In the eighth round, the Vietnamese player will face the world’s defending champion Hou Yifan (Elo 2605) from China, who had trounced famous international grandmaster Judit Polgar (Elo 2710) in the previous game.

Earlier in 2008, Liem met Hou Yifan at the World Junior Chess Championship but lost to the Chinese rival despite having the equal Elo rating of 2577.

Liem, with his current Elo rating of 2714, is expected to win the 8th game to secure the tournament’s top place.
