Vietnam is pushing up the process to apply for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” recognition for Quan Ho, a style of folk songs in the northern province of Bac Ninh.

As part of the application project, a two-day seminar on preserving and promoting folk songs in the contemporary society was held by the Information and Culture Institute in Hanoi from March 29-30.

The seminar drew the participation of representatives from UNESCO, the National Heritage Council and nearly 100 domestic and foreign scientists and cultural researchers.

Participants at the seminar said that Quan Ho folk singing, which is performed between conversational groups of male and female singers who trade elaborate questions and answers, is a special form of music that has proven its vitality through various generations and has reached the pinnacle of folk art.

While affirming the value and the beauty of Quan Ho, the participants proposed measures to preserve and promote the love duets on the basis of ensuring their accuracy and comprehensiveness.

The Information and Culture Institute also plans to summit Ca tru, another special traditional genre of singing in northern Vietnam, for UNESCO Masterpiece of Humanity recognition.
