Quan Ho, a special folk singing tradition of northern Bac Ninh province, with its unique and enjoyable features, deserves to be recognised as an intangible world heritage, said Dr. Gisa Jaehnichen, a German expert in Music.

“Quan Ho folk songs have a strong attachment to locals' daily activities, traditions and festivals,” affirmed Ms Gisa. “In other words, Quan Ho features the Kinh Bac area's culture”.

Quan Ho, proving its vitality through many generations and reaching the pinnacle of folk art, is performed between conversational groups of male and female singers who converse elaborate questions and answers.

During annual village festivals, particularly in spring, local young, both male and female, gather in a yard of a communal house or pagoda, on a hill or some rowing boats and sing Quan Ho.

Songs are composed by singers themselves, basing on their daily activities. The songs are sometimes combined with several classic references and folk verses but still remain their lyricalness.

To preserve Quan Ho folk singing, Ms Gisa said, singing parties should not only be organised during Spring festivals but all year round. More importantly, the songs should feature the province's distinct cultural characteristics.

The German expert has conducted her researches on Vietnamese folk songs for many years.
