Hundreds of black and white photos portraying Hanoi's streets and residents from 1898-1906 are being displayed at an exhibition, which opened at the French Culture Centre (L'Espace) on May 16.

Visitors will have a chance to learn about the daily lives of old Hanoians as well as the landscapes of neighbouring localities.

The "Hanoi 1906-2006" exhibition, which is being held to mark the 100th founding anniversary of the Indochina University - the precursor of Hanoi National University - also showcases many photos depicting the vigorous changes in the lives of the capital's people in recent years.

On the same day, the centre introduced a book about Hanoi in the 1930s titled "Letter from Hanoi" by Jean Tardieu, whose farther, Victor Tardieu, was the first Rector of the Indochina Fine Arts College (now the Hanoi Fine Arts College).

Victor Tardieu was also the painter of an 80 sq.m mural on the wall of the great lecture hall of the former Indochina University in 1921, which has been restored recently.
