The photo Khô Cằn (Waterless) by photographer Vu Duc Huy from Hanoi has won first prize in a photo contest held by the delegation of the European Commission to Vietnam and the Vietnam Artistic Photographers Association (VAPA).

The contest, Climate Change: How Does It Impact Your Life, attracted submissions by more than 110 amateur and professional photographers. The 700 photo submissions express people’s awareness of the global issue and how they can work together to create a better life.

According to the jury, which included members of VAPA and representatives of the EC Delegation to Vietnam, the submitted photos were judged on how they inspire, both aesthetically and intellectually.

The winner received a VND7 million award, while the two runners up received VND5 million each. Three second runners up were awarded VND3 million. The board also gave ten VND1 million consolation prizes.

In addition to being a major provider of development assistance and an important trade partner to Vietnam, the EU is also a leader on global issues like climate change and environmental protection.

At the awards ceremony, which took place in Hanoi on March 3, charge d’affaires of the EC Delegation to Vietnam, Madeleine Kihlberg said, “The renewal sustainable development strategy, adopted by EU leaders in June 2006, reaffirmed the need for global solidarity and recognised the importance of strengthening our work with partners outside the EU, including rapidly developing countries, such as Vietnam, which will have a significant impact on global sustainable development.”
