The National Ca Tru (Ceremonial singing) Festival will take place in Hanoi from June 19-22 with the attendance of artists from 16 provinces and cities, according to the Ministry of Culture and Information.

The festival will highlight the unique characteristics of Ca Tru, a traditional singing genre in northern Vietnam. Participants in the event will also discuss measures to preserve and promote traditional features of Ca Tru.

The traditional art originally appeared in northern Vietnam in the 11th century. It first served royal rituals, but was later passed down to people and used in religious ceremonies, banquets, weddings and friendly meetings.

Ca Tru songs have beautiful tunes and words and a unique manner of performance. The typical stage to sing Ca Tru is a flower-patterned mat, where Ca Tru artist perform mainly in the style of singing-reciting.

Ca Tru has attracted a good number of foreign tourists to the clubs of this art to enjoy its performances. Many have also conducted major studies on the art.

Vietnam expects the original music to be recognised by the UNESCO as a world orally transmitted heritage of humanity.
