Dr Nguyen Dang Vu, deputy director of the Culture and Information Department of central Quang Ngai province said the department has conducted a survey on gong culture in the mountainous district of Tay Tra.

Currently, around 1,045 families from the Kor ethnic minority group in nine communes of Tay Tra district are preserving 1,530 sets of gongs. Tra Quan commune takes the lead in the numbers of gongs with 388 sets, followed by Tra Nham with 285 sets, and Tra Thanh with 253 sets. Around 947 local people can play gongs well while 10 people know how to adjust a gong sound.

 

The provincial department is working with mountainous districts of Ba To, Son Ha, Minh Long, Son Tay and Tra Bong to continue with a survey on gong culture and the numbers of gongs that are being kept by families with the aim of preserving and promoting traditional cultural values in the community.
