Phung Hoa Hoai Linh, a 12-year old actress in “Tam hon me” (Mother’s Soul)- by director Nhue Giang, has won the Muhr AsiaAfrica Feature’s Best Actress prize at the 8th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) on December 14.

Linh was absent at the awards ceremony and her US$8,000 cash prize was received by her representative, director Nhue Giang.

Born in 1999, Linh started her career very early with some television films, most notably “Leu Chong” by director Nguyen Thanh Van.

“Mother’s Soul” received financial support of nearly VND4 billion from the State and the French Fonds Sud Cinema. Its post-poduction was made in Thailand.

The film will compete with 17 others at the 17th National Film Festival to be held in the southcentral province of Phu Yen from December 15-17.

This is the second time Vietnam has won such prestigious award after actress Hong Anh was given at the same prize for her “Trang noi day gieng” (Moon at the Bottom of the Well) directed by Nguyen Vinh Son in 2008.

The DIFF is the leading film festival in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Since its inception in 2004, the festival has served as an influential platform for Arab filmmakers and talents at an international level, by spearheading the cinema movement in the region.

The DIFF has established itself as a major international festival, and a premier showcase for Arab cinema, contributing to the development and growth of the regional industry.
