The number of Vietnamese students studying in the US in the 2006-07 school year has risen by 31.3 percent to a record high compared with other Asian-Pacific countries and territories.

The news was released by the American Institute of International Education (IIE) in its annual “Open Doors 2007” report with the support from the Culture and Education Division of the US State Department.

2007 is also the fourth consecutive year to see the two-digital growth rate in the number of Vietnamese students in the US, now reaching 6,036 in total, the report said.

The number of Vietnamese students in the US now rank 20th among those from other countries. Compared with the figure 10 years ago, the Vietnamese students in the US increased by 380 percent.

The US runs after Australia amongst English-speaking countries to attract Vietnamese students.

Director of the IIE in Vietnam Mark Ashwill said the trend is a positive sign for both countries. He said the US education exhibition held by the IIE in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in October attracted some 6,600 students and their parents, or 40 percent over the last year’s exhibition.
