Tens of thousands will be celebrating and experiencing the culture of the Mong ethnic minority people this week at the Mong Culture Festival 2006 which is being held in the northwestern province of Son La from August 29- September 1.

The event draws the participation of 14 artistic troupes with around 400 Mong artisans and artists who will introduce traditional songs and dances and play unique Mong musical instruments such as the khen (pan pine), dan moi (Jew’s harp) and ken la (leaf hone).

Traditional and Mong-inspired costumes will be modeled during a costume performance. Visitors can also join Mong games and sporting events such as archery and tug of war.

The festival held by the Ministry of Culture and Information and the Son La Provincial People’s Committee, is intended to honour, preserve and develop the Mong culture. It also offers an opportunity to strengthen solidarity among the Mong community nationwide.
