(VOV) -Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh was narrowly defeated by world No.1 Malaysian Lee Chong Wei in the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships on November 23.
Wei began dominantly, opening up a 16-8 lead in the first set, before the Vietnamese player recovered and won some important points to equalise. But Minh could not continue his impressive streak and eventually lost 18-21.
Minh’s confidence was bolstered for the second set and he forced his stronger rival to struggle for a meager 17-15 lead. Wei’s class and determination showed through, however, helping him to a 21-19 victory.
The result is still an encouraging one for Minh, who has lost nine out of his last 10 matches against Wei. His lone head-to-head triumph was earned at the Singapore Open three years ago.
