Vietnam will participate in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival under the theme “Mekong river- Connecting cultures”, which will take place in Washington DC, the US in late June 2007, with the participation of artisans from the Mekong countries Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, China and Vietnam.

In preparation for the event, the Department of Cultural Heritage in coordination with the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology will hold a Mekong region bamboo festival in Hanoi on March 10-11.


Visitors will have a chance to meet with 14 artisans from China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and see the bamboo fish catching tools used by Lao people in Thailand, Khmu people in Laos, Khmer people in Cambodia, Vietnamese people in Dong Thap province, and the Black Thai in Dien Bien province, as well as the basketry of Vietnamese people in Can Tho province and bamboo implements used by Thai people in Yunnan, China.


On the occasion, there will be some special activities for children.
