Vietnam’s international GM Le Quang Liem failed to hold on to his unbeaten streak at the Aeroflot Chess Open, losing to his host Alexander Khalifman on February 11.

Taking advantage of the White pieces, Liem, with the Elo rating of 2714, started the fifth game with impressive attacks aiming to checkmate his rival.

However, Khalifman, who has the Elo rating of 2632, performed well, forcing Liem to surrender after 51 moves.

This is Liem’s first loss at the tournament, and his chances of successfully defending his tournament championship title are slim as there are only four games left.

So far the Vietnamese GM has won one, drawn three and lost one at the event.
