The biggest ever Cai Luong gala night will be held at the Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium in Ho Chi Minh City this December.
Cai Luong is a form of opera which came into being in southern Vietnam in the 1920s. It combines drama and singing.
The event, which will cost VND1.8 billion (roughly US$112,500), is expected to make a breakthrough in Cai Luong's search for a new development direction as traditional arts are facing fierce competition from modern arts.
The performance will be based on Nguyen Du's Truyen Kieu (Kieu's story), a Vietnamese literary masterpiece.
The drama will be different from conventional Cai Luong performance as it is a combination of dance, chorus singing and pop music with the support of modern lighting and sound systems.
