Judoka Van Ngoc Tu has officially won a ticket to compete at the London Olympics next August, according to the International Judo Federation (IJF).

Tu will be the only Asian representative selected from the regional qualification zone.

The Gia Lai-based martial artist who competes in the women’s 48kg category has collected 122 points from a range of tournaments this year, and has been selected despite the fact she is ranked second in Asia behind Alexandra Podryadove of Kazakhstan.

According to the IJF, a country can choose only one athlete from qualifying to compete in London, and Kazakhstan decided to give the ticket to Issanova Gulzhan who takes part in the women’s 78kg pool.

In preparation for the games, Tu will go on a two-month training course in China where she will participate in three international events.

Tu is the fourth Vietnamese athletes to win an Olympic berth. The others are Phan Thi Ha Thanh in gymnastics and Le Huynh Chau and Dieu Linh in taekwondo.

The country hopes to have 10 competitors in London next summer.
