The Japanese pianist, Yosuke Yamashita, will greet audiences at a jazz concert to be held at the Hanoi Opera House on March 12-13.

He will play along with Vietnamese violist Dao Hai Thanh, double bassist Nguyen Quang Trung and drummer Phan Nam.

The pianist will perform classical jazz by Gershwin and his own works in an unique style that can be compared to American free jazz artist Cecil Taylor.

Born in 1942 into a famous family in Tokyo, Yamashita is a familiar name in many popular international jazz festivals and stages. In 1988 he formed the New York Trio and six years later he was invited to join the ceremony marking 50 years of Verve Records, an American jazz label at Carnegie Hall.

Yamashita also wrote music for many Japanese films and in 2003 he was awarded the Imperial Medal of Honor by the Japanese government for his contributions to the arts and academia.

Prior to this, Yamashita visited Vietnam and performed Rhapsody in Blue, also by Gershwin, in Hanoi in December 2009.
