Without striker Cong Vinh, Vietnam were held to a goalless draw against hosts Indonesia in a friendly match on September 15.

Coach Phan Thanh Hung’s men performed well against their Indonesian opponents who are in good form. However, hopefuls Viet Thang, Thanh Luong and Trong Hoang all missed scoring chances.

Indonesia applied the pressing tactics at the beginning of the match, hoping to dominate the game. They met strong resistance from Vietnamese opponents who repelled all attacks and conversely put pressure on their hosts within just 10 minutes.

Goalkeeper Thanh Binh and his substitute Tan Tai worked very hard to save the ball, and they both received assistance from medial workers.

In the 30th minute, Vietnam were rewarded a free kick, but midfielder Vu Phong rolled his shot wide of the far post.

After the interval, Indonesian players still controlled the game, holding the ball most of the time, but did not score any goal.

In the 63rd minute, Thanh Luong failed to hammer home after receiving the ball from his teammate, but once again the ball ran wide of the far post.

Although coach Thanh Hung made several substitutes, no goal was scored until the referee blew the last whistle.

Earlier, Vietnam defeated Southeast Asian champions Malaysia 2-0 in another friendly match.

Vietnam will compete at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup this November.
