The Government has approved a project to build Hue into the first Festival City in Vietnam in an attempt to attract a greater number of tourists to the area.

The new plan will help Hue build on its trademark, attract tourists and showcase the historical and cultural values of the city.

Beginning with the Vietnam-France Cultural Festival in 1992, Hue has become a huge destination for both domestic and foreign visitors after the Hue Festival was successfully organised in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

A string of traditional handicraft festivals held recently have had tour operators salivating at the city's ability to satisfy tourist demands.

Underscoring the tourism direction released by the municipality is a contract on cooperation between the province and Singapore's Akitek Tenggara company until 2015 with a vision through 2025.

Under the contract, Akitek Tenggara will develop 10 key projects to call for investors with the aim of turning Hue into a world renowned tourism spot.
