Under the theme of “Cultural Heritage with integration and development”, the Hue Festival 2008 will be held from June 3-11 with the participation of many artists and sculptors from 27 countries and territories.

The announcement was made at a press briefing in Hanoi on January 24 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Central Thua Thien Hue provincial People’s Committee.


The festival is a cultural forum imbued with the Vietnamese and Hue cultural identity, and will promote international exchange, socio-economic development, and spotlight the Vietnamese tourism development.


2008 also marks the 15th anniversary of the recognition of Hue Ancient Capital as a World Cultural Heritage Site and the 5th anniversary of the recognition of Hue Royal Court Music as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.


Speaking at the press briefing, Ngo Hoa, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee affirmed that the festival is national cultural event and will attract artists from Europe, Asia, America and Australia.

The biannual festival will officially open on June 3, 2008 at Ngo Mon Square and finish on June 11, 2008 on the Huong River. The Fifth International Sculpture Symposium will be launched on May 3rd, 2008 at the Abalone Resort. In addition, a variety of exciting and attractive festivities to welcome in the Hue Festival 2008 will be held throughout Hue City and its surrounding areas.

The first Hue Festival was held in 2000 with the participation of 30 Vietnamese art troupes and two foreign ones as well as 410,000 visitors, including 40,000 foreigners. In 2002, there were 19 domestic and 10 foreign groups of artists from eight countries and 75,000 visitors. The festival attracted 101,950 visitors in 2004 and 100,000 visitors in 2006.
