A two-day festival of traditional music, the first of its kind, was held in Hai Duong city on October 19-20.

The Ca Tru Club Festival 2007, co-organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, drew singers and musicians from 18 Ca Tru clubs in 13 provinces and cities nationwide, along with drum and other musical instruments.

Ca Tru is an old form of chamber music that originated in North Vietnam, associated for much of its history with a geisha-like form of entertainment.

Organisers and researchers are hoping to submit a profile of the festival to UNESCO for a place on the intangible heritage list.

The celebration is also a chance for musicians to share their expertise and bring the ancient art form to a larger audience.
