The 2007 Cong Chieng (Gong) Festival finished in the Central Highland province of Dak Lak on November 24, leaving a good impression on local ethnic minority people and visitors.

In his closing speech, Lu Ngoc Cu, Chairman of the Dak Lak provincial People’s Committee, declared the success of the four-day festival, saying that “the event has helped honour and promote the distinctive cultural values of the gong in relation to the long history of ethnic minority groups living along the Truong Son Mountain Range and in the Central Highlands”. He also said the festival has helped promote cultural exchanges and strengthen solidarity between ethnic groups and between Vietnam and other countries.

The same day, a number of activities were held in Don hamlet to restore the traditional rituals of ethnic minority groups in the Central Highlands. Among them were the water and new rice rituals of the M’Nong ethnic group. Mahouts exhibited elephant hunting and taming skills, while elephant races received a thunderous applause from the spectators.

Local and foreign gong troupes and visitors tasted special M’Nong, E De, J’Rai dishes and some from Laos, and drank Ruou Can (a kind of rice wine drunk through a bamboo straw).
