The Germany-Vietnam University (GVU) will be built in Vietnam with an investment of 450,000 euros from the German state of Hessen, said Governor Roland Koch.

Meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Tran Duc Mau in Wiesbaden city recently, the Governor mentioned an agreement reached during the Vietnam visit by German President Horst Koehler in late May, which has led to the establishment of the tertiary institution.

German Minister of Science and Arts Udo Corts, who attended the meeting, said GVU would help promote the German language and culture in Vietnam, contributing to the exchange of students and lecturers, as well as bringing long-term economic benefits to the two countries.

Minister Corts and Vietnamese Education Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan signed the agreement on the establishment of the university in May.

The project was highly appreciated by the Vietnamese Government, said Ambassador Mau, saying that that the university would serve as a model for the cooperation between Vietnam and Hessen State in particular, and Germany in general.

The GVU is scheduled to open for 3,000 students in the 2008-2009 school year. Initially it will provide training in natural sciences and technology, humanities, and medicine-pharmaceuticals.

Although courses will be taught in English, German will be compulsory for Vietnamese students.
