A German university named Germany-Vietnam University (GVU) will be built in Ho Chi Minh City with assistance from the German State of Hessen.

According to an official letter from the Government Office on October 29, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan entrusted the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ho Chi Minh City National University with presentation of a project assessment report to the PM on November 15.

The Deputy PM asked the National University to provide staff for the new university’s managing board and other functional departments and discuss with German partners preparations for its commencement in 2008.

He also asked the Ministries of Education and Training, Foreign Affairs, Planning and Investment and Finance to search ODA sources for the GVU and submit reports to the PM before December 31, 2007.

The GVU is planning to enrol 3,000 students for the 2008-2009 school year. Initially, it will provide training in natural sciences and technology, social and humanity sciences, and medicine-pharmaceuticals.

At first, courses will be taught in English, and then German will be compulsory for students at the university.
