A French television channel, France 3, on the night of May 4, screened a documentary film about Dien Bien Phu to mark the 53rd anniversary of Vietnam’s Dien Bien Phu historical victory.

The historical documentary film, which was directed by Patrick Jeudy in 2004 and entitled “Dien Bien Phu”, lasts for 1 hour and 5 minutes. It reveals secret reports and little known stories about the participation of the French army with French leaders planning and making final decisions to build entrenched fortifications in Dien Bien Phu.

The film also includes memoirs of French war veterans who participated in the Dien Bien Phu battle and shows how France’s ambitious plan to build the strongest entrenched fortifications in Indochina was defeated by the Vietnamese military in 56 days and nights.

The film ends with a scene at the French garrison headquarters in Dien Bien Phu where the French expeditionary army officers led by General De Castries, surrendered Vietnamese military troops.

The Dien Bien Phu victory was a significant event for the Vietnamese military and people. It marked the downfall of the old colonialism, ended French army’s ambitious dream of indefinitely occupying Indochina and gave strong impetus to the national liberation movements across the world.
