On Saturday in Hanoi, over 200 young people gave out free hugs in the streets near Hoan Kiem Lake. They practised “random acts of kindness” simply in an effort to make the people who accepted a hug feel better.

The students were responding to a worldwide Internet call to extend warmth globally.

The programme’s founder, Australian Juan Mann, started the movement when he arrived at Sydney Airport in June 2004 from London with no-one to meet him. He watched as other travellers were warmly greeted by relatives and friends and wished the same for himself.

Together with youth in Hanoi and HCM City, more than 60 students in Nha Trang city handed out their “free-hugs” on July 29 as part of the “Free Hug” programme, which is spreading through Vietnam. .

With the hope of bringing people closer, the young people offered “free-hugs” to their relatives, friends and tourists in the streets.

This is the first time the programme has been held in Hanoi, Nha Trang and HCM City to create a healthy playground for young people who wish for a better life.
