A festival to celebrate the death anniversary of the Hung Kings opened in northern Phu Tho province on April 22 (the sixth day of the third lunar month). Diverse cultural activities are underway such as hat xoan (Xoan singing), drum beating, lion dancing and sedan processions.

The 2007 Hung Temple Festival is being held by the Phu Tho provincial People’s Committee from April 22-26. The ritual ceremonies are held for three days from April 24-26 and festive activities run from April 22-26 at the Hung Temples historical relic site in Phu Tho’s Viet Tri city.

2007 is the first year the National Assembly (NA) has adopted a resolution on
amendments and supplements to Article 73 of the Labour Code, providing one more national holiday annually for working people to celebrate the Hung Kings’ death anniversary while still enjoying full salary. This is in line with the expectations of all Vietnamese people and the ethical tradition “When drinking water, remember its source”.

Currently, the Hung Temples relic site continues to be upgraded and refurbished with many new projects underway. In 2006, projects to build temples to Lac Long Quan, Mother’s Au Co and the Hung Kings were implemented with a view to creating a place of worship to 18 generations of Hung Kings who are credited with founding the country.

This year, beginning from the second day of the first lunar month, Phu Tho province launched a programme” Tracing the roots” and organised pilgrimages to the Hung Temples.

Director of the Hung Temples Historical Relic Site Nguyen Tien Khoi said, “ The Hung Temple Festival attracts an average of 10,000 tourists per day. In recent years, festival services have been well organised, thus helping to lure higher numbers of tourists than in previous years.”
