Imai Nobuko, who is considered one of the world’s most outstanding viola players, performed in a concert at the Hanoi Opera House on May 13 accompanied by famous Vietnamese artists including young violinist Bui Cong Duy and cellist Ngo Hoang Quan.

They presented music lovers with masterpieces by Mozart and Brahms as part of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra’s “Mozart Cycle”.

Imai Nobuko studied at the Juilliard School and the Toho School of Music at Yale University in New York city. She has also won the top prizes at international competitions in Munich and Geneva.

Her many prizes include the Avon Arts Award (1993), the Education Minister's Art Prize for Music awarded by the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs (1994), the Mobil Prize of Japan (1995) and the Suntory Music Prize (1996). In 2003, Imai received the Purple Ribbon Medal from the Japanese government for her outstanding contribution to music.

She formed the world-known Michelangelo Quartet and established the first International Viola Contest in Japan in 2009.
