An exhibition of more than 100 paintings and sculptures depicting the characters from the stories of Nam Cao (1917-1951), one of Vietnam's most outstanding writers of the 20th century, is being held at the Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi.

The event was jointly organised by the Vietnamese Writers Association and the Vietnam News Agency's Sport and Culture newspaper to honour the writer's achievements on the occasion of the writer’s 90th birth anniversary.

The exhibition was the result of a campaign to celebrate the writer and his memorable characters. A total of 87 artists from across the nation submitted their works, including paintings and sculptures from many of Vietnam's most celebrated contemporary artists.

Nam Cao is considered to have great contribution to the development of Vietnamese prose, and many of his works are regarded as classics of modern Vietnamese literature. His characters in novels and short stories, including Chi Pheo and Thi No in Chi Pheo, Lao Hac (old man Hac) in Lao Hac, Hoang and Do in Doi Mat (The Eyes), are still alive in the hearts of Vietnamese readers.

Nam Cao is also regarded was one of the founders of the 'new literature' of newly-independent Vietnam since 1945.

All the exhibits are published in a book to be auctioned by Le Media, with part of the going to future art campaigns for other celebrated writers.
