CDs featuring the traditional music of the Dao ethnic group in Vietnam's northwestern region will be available in the market soon.

Ahead of the release, researcher Laurent Jeanneau, who compiled the selection, organized a performance at the Goethe Institute in Hanoi on March 18, where amateur singers from Lung Khau hamlet in Sa Pa district of mountainous Lao Cai province sang ethnic songs and played traditional instruments.

One performer said the music plays an important role in the cultural life of Dao people as it reflects their religious faith and social relations. Dao people have preserved their distinct music orally.

During his two-year stay in Vietnam, ethnomusicologist Jeanneau has recorded the music of several ethnic minorities in northern provinces, including H'Mong people.
