English language standards for Vietnam's tourism sector were presented at a seminar held in Hanoi on September 13 under an EU-funded project on human resource development for Vietnamese tourism.

The seminar was co-organised by the Vietnam General Administration of Tourism (VGAT) and the TOEIC Vietnam.

According to VGAT Deputy General Director Nguyen Tuan Canh, the local tourism sector should raise the English language levels of the tourism workforce.

A recent survey of 200 hotels and travel companies across the country emphasized the need to raise English standards for workers in different positions in the tourism sector.

The tests of English knowledge, made by TOEIC Vietnam for more than 1,000 workers in the surveyed hotels and travel companies, showed that 45 percent of guides, 53-87 percent of security personnel, 42-76 percent of room services, 67-69 percent of receptionists and 85 restaurant servants failed to meet the standards.
