About VND8.5 billion will be allocated to protect, preserve and enlarge tame elephant herds in the Central Highland province of Dak Lak from now to 2011.

The project will be funded by the central State budget, the local administration, international preservation organizations and tourism businesses.

In 1985, Dak Lak province had 502 elephants. The number of elephants had fallen to 115 by 1997 and to 84 by 2000. Last year, the province had only 64 elephants left.

It is said that most of the tame elephants in Dak Lak died, as they were taken to other provinces by tourism businesses by could not adapt to living new environment.
