The Cultural Festival of the Chinese-Vietnamese on the Lunar New Year 2007 kicked off at April 30 Park in Ho Chi Minh City on February 28, with an aim of strengthening national great unity and encouraging the entire society to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural values in the integration and development process.

The festive atmosphere prevailed over the city as it was lit by thousands of lanterns. The event was participated by more than 2,200 artists of 22 art troupes from 22 provinces and cities, including An Giang, Bac Giang, Ha Giang, Bac Lieu, Ho Chi Minh City, Ca Mau, Dong Thap and Soc Trang.


Speaking at the opening ceremony, Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee said the event showed the State and Government’s care for the Chinese – Vietnamese community engaging in the renewal process with a view to strengthening national great unity, and promoting the Chinese – Vietnamese’s cultural tradition and encouraging the entire society to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural values in the integration and development process.


The event is a chance for Vietnamese people of Chinese origin to introduce and honour their achievements and contributions to the country's socio-economic and cultural development.


Chairman Quan affirmed that more than half a million Chinese – Vietnamese people living in Ho Chi Minh City are part of its citizens, their culture is a component of Vietnamese culture and their economic achievements are indispensable from the city’s economic achievements. The Chinese – Vietnamese community in recent years has gained significant achievements in the cultural, educational and social fields.


The sound of drumbeat opened a magnificent gala night with a wide range of cultural activities such as musical performances, shows of traditional fashion costumes, unicorn, lion and dragon dances, folk games, exhibition of calligraphic painting, and Chinese food introduction.


In Zone A, a group of Chinese – Vietnamese artists from Binh Thuan province performed an act of the “Nghing Ong” festival featuring the cultural life of Chinese-Vietnamese people living in riverside areas. Hundreds of traditional costumes worn by Chinese-Vietnamese people across the country were introduced during the performance.


In Zone B, visitors were invited to join folk games such as tug-of-war and swinging.

In Zone D, visitors enjoyed eating different dishes of delicious Chinese-Vietnamese food.


Many activities took place at the Cultural House in District 5 such as the display of lanterns, art performances and exchanges with artists coming from Hong Kong.

A seminar on building the cultural life of the Chinese-Vietnamese community in the renewal period and many other interesting activities will be held during the festival which will run until March 4.
